# Introduction
I know it has been a while since I wrote a blog post, but there have been a lot of things going on and I am just trying to play catch up on many of them. Rest assured though that I have been keeping my eye on things and trying to do the best I can to stay up to date on all of the newest updates and releases. Since my last post, I have returned the ViWoods AiPaper tablet and branched out into viewing various other devices. However, this post is not about those activities. If that is of interest and you would like to support me on Patreon, you can join and read my latest [Random Thoughts](https://www.patreon.com/posts/random-thoughts-143669777?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_link) newsletter. However, in this post, we are going to talk about the main areas of improvement for the [Supernote](https://supernote.com/?sca_ref=5405083.rmKBHKIeVR) platform to stay viable and competitive in the remainder or 2025 and beyond. As a long-time [Supernote](https://supernote.com/?sca_ref=5405083.rmKBHKIeVR) user (over 4.5 years), I believe they have one of the best notetaking and organizational approaches on the market. In this article, we will examine some of the innovations and challenges faced by the team at [Ratta](https://supernote.com/pages/about-us).
# An Increasingly Competitive Market
[Supernote](https://supernote.com/?sca_ref=5405083.rmKBHKIeVR) finds themselves in a particularly competitive space right now. I have written extensively about different competitors, but just to name a few they include:
- [**reMarkable**](https://amzn.to/4nZG4eD) - What many would consider the largest e-notetaking player in the market. The company has grown tremendously since offering the reMarkable 1 and has since released three tablets (including two color devices) that are, while expensive, an excellent paper replacement according to many.
- [**BOOX**](https://shop.boox.com/?ref=change1820) - This is perhaps the most direct competitor to the [Supernote](https://supernote.com/?sca_ref=5405083.rmKBHKIeVR) platform. BOOX offers an extensive variety of tablets and devices that have full Google Play support, color options, and even phone-sized readers with data capabilities.
- [**ViWoods**](https://amzn.to/47Zpbe9) - A relatively new player (just a year old), the company has come on strong with both an 8.2 inch and 10.65 inch device using some of the latest hardware. They also just released a new pocket-sized e-reader to compete with both reMarkable and BOOX. You can see a couple of previous Blog articles on this platform:
- [[ViWoods AiPaper - Interesting but Unfinished]]
- [[Daily Driving the ViWoods AiPaper]]
- [**Kindle Scribe**](https://amzn.to/43BHdSh) - The original iteration of the Scribe was launched almost two years ago and is widely seen as one of the best options for those firmly embedded in the Amazon ecosystem. Additionally, they are in the process of releasing new color, black and white, and devices without a front light.
- [**Kobo**](https://amzn.to/4807CKK) - The entry of Kobo to the market of e-notetaking tablets has been perceived by some as a little less successful than Kindle, and is also seen as a reader-first company attempting to add in writing features. They do offer both black and white and color options and stylus support is rather controversial for moving to an active stylus model and way from EMR (Electromagnetic Resonance). However, BOOX and reMarkable have since come out with active stylus devices.
- [**Penstar**](https://amzn.to/4pgjCit) - Another new entry to the market that is also using advanced hardware, including some of the best screens. these devices run the gamut from stylus-only input devices to color and touch devices. While not as widespread as the other competitors, they have gained some widespread attention recently.
- [**iFlYTEK**](https://amzn.to/4i359E5) - Primarily an AI transcription and translation company focusing on voice recorders, the company entered the market first with their 7.8 inch notetaking device. However, they recently released a 10.65 inch notetaker that claims to be the thinnest in the world.
- [**Pocketbook**](https://amzn.to/4r0WYfw) - Known for exceptional e-readers and a Linux-based operating system, Pocketbook entered the notetaking environment first with devices that did not have Google apps or run on Android. These devices were met with mixed reviews and are believed to run on notetaking software from BigMe.
- [**BigMe**](https://amzn.to/47NpaLC) - Many see BigMe is as similar platform to BOOX, although not as well developed or even competitive from a pricing standpoint. However, the feature sets and sheer number of devices offered by the company and the many of the software aesthetics are closely aligned.
So, what does this mean? Is this every competitor out there for the Supernote? Absolutely not, and some would argue that there are even more viable and well-designed products on the market. However, these are the most widely discussed alternatives, and provide a good variety of different approaches. The competition continues to ratchet up and Ratta needs to be on their tows to make whatever changes are necessary to meet these challenges head on.
# What Supernote is Doing Well
There are many thing that Supernote does well, many of which have been documented in my other blogs below:

While I will leave you to read any of these that you feel led to, I want to take this time to talk about the overall philosophy and approach that Supernote appears to be taking towards their products and services. For me, that is where the true value of the platform lies and why they have been successful. It is important to note that they have seen some shifts, while still staying true to the ideal of a customer-focused brand. For example, the focus on modularity with the [Nomad](https://supernote.com/products/supernote-nomad?sca_ref=5405083.rmKBHKIeVR) and [Manta](https://supernote.com/products/supernote-manta?sca_ref=5405083.rmKBHKIeVR), in conjunction with the launch of the [DIY Zone](https://supernote.com/pages/diy-zone?sca_ref=5405083.rmKBHKIeVR), is following through the long-term goals of sustainability, customization, and repairability.
Additionally, their software experience continues to enhance existing features, while also expanding or re-imagining new ones. For example, their newly reimagined [Digest](https://www.reddit.com/r/Supernote/comments/1n00khm/introducing_the_reimagined_digest/) has created value in a tool that had not been fully realized in previous versions, while their [Atelier](https://www.reddit.com/r/Supernote/comments/1n7ymex/version_1126_release_for_atelier_on_manta_and/) app now supports a reference image layer and changing the opacity of layers. If you want to see my deep dive on the Supernote Digest, check out this video below:

One other thing Ratta has done recently is to pivot to begin thinking about their approach to a multi-device ecosystem. While the original intent of Supernote was to pick the right size device for you and not have multiple devices, they recognized that many users wanted a cross device experience. For this reason, they are in the midst of a redesign and improved version of their cloud and partner apps (partner apps are already good) to allow for improved syncing across devices and adding in a "Plugin Ecosystem." # What Could Be
Alright, there is no doubt that I am impressed with the Supernote devices, and the company's approach to sustainability and customer service. However, there are areas of improvement, and unfortunately, I have mentioned many of them before. I want to be clear that when I say unfortunately, it is not because Supernote is not listening or because I am missing something that I absolutely need. However, some of my frustrations have been around for a while. Here are the things that I think they could do in a near future update that would make their platform stand out even more:
## Calendar
The Supernote Calendar is one of the best calendar apps on the market. A few changes, some minor, and it would be best in class:
- Allow notes to show by both created and last access dates. Currently, you can only see notes in the calendar on the date created.
- Allow multiple calendars to be viewable on the device. They already allow for syncing with Google Calendar and Outlook, just take that a step further.
- Show ToDo's in the bottom navigation. Ideally, it would also be great to be able to sync with Google Tasks or Microsoft ToDo, but being able to see tasks on the calendar would be huge.
- Show recent documents in the bottom navigation. While this is not a huge one for me with the quick access menu, it would streamline the UI and mirror the notes.
- Allow writing on the daily calendar view. One nice thing about the calendar is that all functions work with or without an external service. Being able to write on the daily view would be huge for those people just wanting to replace a paper calendar.
## Notes
I am always hard-pressed to think of ways to improve the notes experience because it has always worked well for me. However, I have thought really hard and there are a few minor tweaks that I think would make it again, best in class:
- **Keywords** - I love this feature, and right now it works fine, but is only at the page level. Allowing users to take actual words and then highlighting those keywords would be very useful for finding them when searching.
- **Subheadings** - This one isn't as big of a deal for me, but lately I have been noticing that it might be nice to have the ability to create quick subheadings in my notes. I tend to have one main heading and then just use arrows and indentions throughout the note. However, if I could create subheadings more purposefully that then exported in a PDF export, that would be great.
- **ToDos** - This is one that would be really beneficial for me. I would like to see the ToDo items have a check box next to them or at least be marked in some way, showing that they need to be done. Also, being able to check that item off (or strike through) from within the note to complete it would be awesome.
- **SD Card Linking** - I know that this has been partially completed, in that if you move a file from main storage to the SD card, the links are maintained. You can also create a link from a file on the SD card to the device storage. However, you cannot select the SD card from within a note on the device storage. While I do not have a need for this, many other users would and with the expandable storage, it could be a huge benefit.
## Reader App
I do not need a lot in a reader app. Give me some control over the font size, margins, and good annotation tools. However, there are a couple things that I do wish Supernote would address:
- **Color Highlighting** - Ok, so this one seems like it should just happen. At one point Supernote allowed for three colors of highlighting and then immediately removed the feature. I tend to only use yellow, but a lot of other folks use pink, green, or light blue. I know it is a black and white device, but since this is a traditional writing workflow, I think they would be well served to revisit it.
- **Dictionary Support** - Again, this one kind of seems like something that should have just been added out of the gate. Other manufacturers just do a better job of allowing a dictionary, Wikipedia, web search, or even an AI (although I would not want that).
## Accessories
Supernote already has an exceptional set of accessories, and some really innovative collaborations with LAMY, including the [Crystal Clear Thinking Set](https://supernote.com/products/supernote-nomad-crystal-lamy-safari-vista-special-set?sca_ref=5405083.rmKBHKIeVR). They also have their [Heart of Metal Pens](https://supernote.com/products/heart-of-metal-pen-2?sca_ref=5405083.rmKBHKIeVR), which are by far still my favorite. However, a couple of suggestions:
- **Nomad Book Light** - Well, this one is not on my list, but I do think it would be valuable for many people. The Nomad has pogo pins on the top and a good book light accessory for those who would like to read in bed makes sense.
- **Manta Full Folio** - While I love the half-folio design, I get that a lot of people would like to have something more robust and feel Supernote would benefit from providing an option.
- **Manta Side Dust Cover** - The durability of the Manta and the beauty of the device might have some wanting to use it without a cover at all. However, when you take the cover off, the pogo pins an the holes for the cover hooks are left exposed. During my initial review, I mentioned the need for a cover to protect the device. This would be a huge win.
- **Manta Keyboard Case** - The Manta is begging for a quality keyboard case. Supernote is the only e-ink tablet with their native document type as a Microsoft Word document. With the addition of text notes and the new Digest features, I think this is severely needed.
## An A4 Sized Device
Now it is time for the big one. Yes, I want an A4 Supernote more than anything right now. This would be the perfect device for me. My Manta is so good that if I had to go to one device tomorrow, I would keep it. However, being able to markup PDFs and other documents in their native size would be a game changer for me, especially in the academic world. Right now, the Note Max is the best device at that size, but the software experience is not quite as seamless.
# Conclusions & Final Thoughts
I know, this was a long post, but I had a lot to say. The Supernote platform is my favorite for a reason. It is not because I think other platforms are bad. In fact, I am truly enjoying the entire line of BOOX devices and feel them to be exceptional based on your use case. I would say that about the other devices as well. However, if you are looking for what I see as the perfect balance between focus and productivity, I think the Supernote line of devices meets that criteria unless you need color, a front light, or an A4 size. However, in the 8-11 inch device category, I don't think it gets any better, unless Supernote continues to make it that way. My suggestions here are based on using the platform for 4.5 years and growing along with it. That being said, I look forward to what awaits us between now and the new year, and beyond.
